THE STORY OF GIOPPINO
Three big goitres are his main characteristic, which he calls his “garnets” or “corals”. He shows them proudly, considering them as jewels and not as a physical defect.
Tradition says he was born in Zanica, from Bortolo Söcalonga and Maria Scatoléra, where he lived with his wife Margì and his son Bortolì.
His name in our dialect is Giopì de Sanga.
He has two brothers too, Giacomì and the little Pisanbraga, and his grandparents are called Bernardo and Bernarda.
His face is bold, puffy and ruddy, and he is dressed in green clothes bordered in red, dark pants
typically used by countrymen, and a round hat with a ribbon. He works as a farmer and a a laborer, however he prefers to earn easy money with random (and less fatiguing) jobs.
His language and manners are extremely rustic, but he has a good heart in the end. He carries a walking stick with him, often used to “show his reasons”, always in favour of the small and the oppressed. He has a passion for good wine, and says he is deeply in love with his ife Margì.
Gioppino represents the rustic simple-minded who is always ready to help the weak, showing his good heart.
